Fort Walton Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – We are officially into our Spring patterns this week and the bite is firing up for the season. Anglers heading out to take advantage of the pier bite can expect to find steady Kings and a fantastic Cobia bite. Morning anglers are finding more and more Pompano as well. Reds, Sheepshead and Whiting have also been caught but are far more prominent inshore and from the surf. Inshore the Trout and Reds are the main target, especially on the flats. Look for the bait to find the fish. Towards the Intracoastal from Destin to Pensacola there has been great numbers of Spanish. The diving Seagulls are giving away their location as they feed. Structure such as bridges and deeper docks in the sound continue to hold and produce decent Sheepshead and Snapper. Live Shrimp has been the key to hooking them. We expect this to continue into the weekend.

OFFSHORE – Anglers fishing nearshore or offshore this week have found plenty of success so far. When the weather allows, boats heading towards the rigs are hooking plenty of Tuna. The sizes have been great and the bite is consistent. Towards the edge we are seeing decent Wahoo as well. When weather or timing keeps anglers restricted to the nearshore bite there has still been many species to target. The Cobia are better than they have been in years, both numbers and sizes. There are also some Kings mixed in however they are not as prominent. If you are heading towards the edges you will find better numbers. Typical of the time of year, the bottom bite has been steadily producing Grouper as well as Tilefish and Sea Bass. Searching structure such as wrecks and reefs has been most productive. Closer in, Mingos have been caught along the edges in roughly 300 feet of water. Scamp and Red Grouper are mixed in. The Red Grouper are more plentiful off East Beach. The Spanish have made their way in and are closer to the beach this week.

INSHORE – The Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) are hitting really well this week. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are still biting. Sheepshead are hot inshore. Anglers are finally catching Cobia in the area. They are still off the beach and have not moved to the pier yet.

OFFSHORE – A few Grouper (Grouper, Gag) have been caught in roughly 120 feet. Anglers are producing good sizes. Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are great catch and release fish. White Snapper and Beeliners (Snapper, Vermillion & Grunt, White) are consistent. Kings (Mackerel, King) are swimming as well. Search for them around the whistle buoy and catch them on the troll.

BAIT REPORT – Ballyhoo is in the marina and the bay.

Fort Walton Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing the Northwest will provide plenty of activity for anglers this week. Trout continue to turn up from Port St. Joe to Navarre. Fishing them early or late in the day using live bait has been best. Reds typically go hand in hand when fishing Trout. They seem to be just about everywhere this week from bays, piers, bridges, passes and beaches. You just need to follow the bait schools to find the fish and then cast artificials to hook them on an outgoing tide. Your Sheepshead will be around on structure while Pompano are making their way onto the beach. Spanish have also shown up on the beach. Hit them with Squid to bring them in.

OFFSHORE – When anglers can make it offshore they are still finding a decent bite. Triggerfish , Snapper, and Grouper are all providing great catch and release action. Vermillion, Porgy, Black Snapper as well as Black and Red Grouper can also be caught offshore but be sure to check the regulations to see where you are permitted to fish for them. Amberjack are now also catch and release as of this week so be sure to keep that in mind when hooking one. Heading towards the Towers and structure nearshore Cobia are following rays and turtles as they move East and West. Cast a jig with live Eels for the best bite. You may also hook onto some Flounder using the same method.

Fort Walton Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – This week we are beginning to see the Pompano begin to run during the day. Crooked Island beach in the Port St. Joe area has been a particularly good area to fish for them. There are good numbers of Whiting taking Fishbites in similar areas. Anglers are reporting decent Reds and Trout taking soft plastics like Zman lures or live baits such as Shrimp or Minnows. The Trout are increasing in size along with a good amount of slot Reds. Search the shallows to find them. Flounder and Spanish are swimming the bay. You will find them in deeper pockets of water. Spanish are swimming more or less in 6-8 feet towards the North side of the bay. Anglers have been trolling to catch them. Sheepshead are beginning to fire up on structure as usual. The Cobia should begin to arrive soon as well.

OFFSHORE – We continue to see improvement from the region this week. The fishing is firing up, especially the bottom bite throughout the day. There has been a wide variety of fish to take advantage of including Snapper, Grouper, Sea Bass, Triggerfish and even a few Sheepshead a bit closer to shore. Anglers are easily catching good bags of Sheepshead as they are stacked up on structure. Spanish are steady into this week while the Ajs are slowing down. Towards the surface the Bonito are being caught on the troll.

Fort Walton Beach Fishing Report

INSHORE – Redfish and Trout are hungry so there has been no shortage of nice fish this week. The bay has been the key area to fish them in Port. St. Joe and they are swimming the inshore docks and piers in the evening through to Destin. As usual, the moving tide is most productive. Sheepshead are also stacked up on structure from Panama to Destin. Anglers trolling can expect to see Spanish Mackerel along the coast. Clarkspoons and jigs are the best setups to load up on these fish. Pompano and Whiting are running the beach, more prominently towards Port St. Joe. Moving towards bridges anglers can expect to see Flounder and Drum. Catch and release anglers can move their focus to the bay where there are plenty of Tarpon biting.

OFFSHORE – The bottom bite for Amberjack in this area has been taking off this week. Port St. Joe is holding great numbers if you can get out to 150 feet of water. A variety of live bait has been their preference so far. As you move towards Navarre the Amberjack become a bit more scattered while the Snapper and Triggerfish begin to heat up. Nearshore, there has been a good run of Cobia and Spanish Mackerel from Port St. Joe through to Destin.

Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – It has been difficult to hit the inshore waters and not see any Trout or Redfish. They are riddled throughout the intracoastal to canals to the bay. Varying in sizes we are finding both species all the way to Pensacola. Your best bet is to fish moving tides towards inlets. Deeper holes in roughly 6-8 ft of water has been the key. If you are hitting the surf this week not only will you find scattered Redfish but there has also been consistent Whiting and Pompano to fill your cooler with. Start your day off right with a first light bite, or finish with a few cast on the surf at last light for some good sized fish. The Flounder bite is beginning to improve along the seawall however they are far more prominent in the bay. It has been no surprise that Mud Minnows are the best bait to catch them. As we move towards Destin we find they are still holding up in deeper water. A few occasional catches this week include Sheepshead on rock piles and bridges, and Spanish on the beach towards Navarre. We are also starting to see bait such as Pilchards and cigar Minnows return to the surf.

OFFSHORE – The nicer weather in the past week has allowed anglers to finally make it offshore. The Amberjack bite is turning on along with a solid mix of Gray Triggerfish. The Triggers are sometimes difficult to avoid when targeting Ajs. Begin jigging in 90-150 ft feet. They are consistent from Port St. Joe through Pensacola. Anglers who are able to make it nearshore can target a steady catch of Snapper and Grouper species along wrecks and reefs. A handful of Cobia have shown up as well and we expect numbers to increase as the Spring patterns set in.

INSHORE – Sheepshead have had a decent showing at the passes throughout the region. Surf anglers will enjoy the variety of fish from Panama City Beach over to Pensacola. Pompano and Whiting are the majority of what’s being caught. Other species being caught from the surf include: Redfish, Black Drum, and the occasional Blacktip Shark.
Moving inside the bays, there has been decent Trout bites on Z-man Paddle Tails, some Redfish are hitting these too. Water temperatures are warming up so the fish are in transition. This means you will find some fish in their typical cold water spots, but also in their warmer water spots.

A bit closer in the Triggerfish are becoming more consistent. They are mixed with a solid Snapper variety in 140 ft or less. Moving shallower anglers have found the Flounder continue to bite on wrecks and reefs. When the weather permits anglers to head out to the oil rigs and farther the main target has been Blackfin Tuna and Swordfish.

INSHORE – Things are fairly typical of the season despite not having typical February weather. Beaches throughout the Panhandle have been good for Pompano. Whiting have also been on the beaches. Some of the bays and sounds have had a good Trout bite along with Redfish and Drum. Canals have been particularly good for Trout and Reds. Deeper docks towards the West end of Florida have been producing Sheepshead and Mangrove Snapper, they haven’t been on fire quite yet.

OFFSHORE – Keeper Amberjack have been hit or miss from Port St. Joe over to the Alabama border. The best sizes this week have come from 20 miles off of Pensacola. Boats headed out from Panama City have found a good Vermilion Snapper bite. Quite a few fish have been up to 4 lbs and limits are common. Boats out of Pensacola able to travel well past 20 miles have been able to get on Yellowfin Tuna. Most of the Tuna have been caught trolling and live baiting.

On the piers the Flounder (Flounder, Southern) have been caught in great numbers so far. There are also a few Redfish (Drum, Red) and Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) mixed in. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are here and there, but not super consistent yet. Generally they can be caught in deeper water and grassy areas on Shrimp or MirrOlures. Sheepshead are beginning to fire up. Search structure such as bridges, deep water docks and jetties to find them. Their preference is live Fiddler Crabs or Shrimp. Surf anglers are finding plenty of success with Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Whiting. Shrimp, Sand Fleas and Fish bites are the key to hooking them. INSHORE – In the bay the Redfish (Drum, Red) action is quite good around deep water docks, use live Shrimp to catch keepers here. Dropping live Pinfish near the bridges and trolling deep diving plugs is producing oversized bull Reds. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are hit or miss due to warm water best action on the Trout has been on the far east end of the bay. Flounder gigging is very good. Surf Fishing for Pompano (Pompano, Florida) and Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) are the best bet here, some Redfish action and plenty of Sharks at sunset and after. From the pier there are still a few Kings still around, Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), Bluefish, a few Flounder and a few Redfish have been being caught. As it cools off there could still be plenty of good King Mackerel days left. OFFSHORE – Offshore Trolling we are seeing plenty of Wahoo, Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) and Yellowfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin) action, as long as the weather continues to be like this don’t expect this action to diminish anytime soon. On the bottom we still have a few weekends of Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) fishing in state waters, plenty of Mingo Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion) and some Black Snapper (Snapper, Gray) action. Along the ledges and rocks in 200-350 ft ranges there is good Gag Grouper (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Scamp) action and Scamp, it is better to the southeast than the southwest. Nearshore Trolling with the warm weather the King Mackerel (Mackerel, King) bite is still very good, some Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) action, a few Wahoo and an occasionally Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) are being caught. INSHORE – The Redfish bite is hot this week. Anglers are trolling for oversized Redfish around the Mid Bay Bridge and the big schools of bait where the birds are working on the flats. They are pulling deep diving plug such as YoZuri or Rapala lure that runs 10-15 ft. Live bait Shrimp fishing around the Destin Bridge, Coastguard station and deeper boat docks is producing keeper sized Redfish (Drum, Red). Some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) have turned up but they will improve as the temperature drops. Anglers are gigging Flounder (Flounder, Southern) but not catching many. Again, the bite will improve when things cool down. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – In the gulf there is Red Snapper on the weekends and they are doing well. Kings (Mackerel, King), Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) and Wahoo are still around and doing well with the warm temperature. Grouper fishing for Gags and Scamps (Grouper, Gag & Grouper, Scamp) is productive with a few Reds. There are plenty of Mangrove Snapper (Snapper, Gray & Snapper, Red). The Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) fishing has been great from 90 ft to 200 ft. The day troll is great while the night bite is better chunking around the rigs. Ballyhoo rigged with an islander is your best bet to catch them on the troll. BAIT REPORT – Cigar Minnows, Herring (Threadfins) and Alewives are being caught this week. Cigar Minnows are on the reef. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Along the beaches and near shore wrecks there are good numbers of Kings (Mackerel, King), some Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin), some small chicken Dolphin and a few Sailfish (Billfish – Sailfish) being reported. Mostly on Live cigar Minnows and Yozuri Lures. In the bay I would not say the Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) fishing is on fire but there have been some good numbers, what we have seen is some very large Trout, four or five lately over 8lbs and 2 I have seen right at 10lbs. Reds (Drum, Red) are around the bridges and deep water docks. From the surf June grass is starting to appear so not as many pompano and whiting, lots of ladyfish and hardtails in the day. Sharks are abundant after the sun goes down. From the Pier Kings have been on and off, the Tarpon are showing up in good numbers. Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish) make an appearance every once in awhile. Lots of hardtails, some Ladyfish and Bluefish. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – Tap a fish below for additional tips and tricks! OFFSHORE – We are in the midst of one of the best offshore season in a long time. It seems like that lately if you have not caught a Blue Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, Blue) over 600lbs you don’t have a chance in any of the tournaments. Wahoo and Dolphin are abundant and very good size one being caught, I have seen several Wahoo over 80lbs and quite a few Dolphin over 30lbs. The Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin) bite has been hot around the rigs and in open water around the spur regular. Now let’s talk about Swordfish (Billfish – Swordfish), not sure if is just the fact more people are fishing for them or if there are just more of them but I can’t remember the sword fishing ever being this good. On the bottom Red Snapper (Snapper, Red) have been very good except on the East beach, have heard it is quiet there. Groupers (Grouper, Snowy & Grouper, Gag) biting in 150 to 320 ft range, scamp in the 210ft to 340 ft range. Deep dropping for Tilefish (Tilefish, Blueline), Snowy Grouper and Barrel Groupers has been good on the steps and dumping grounds and down to the southeast of the Alaska. INSHORE – The mid day bite is slower due to the heat and water temperatures. The early morning and late afternoon bite is more productive. The Reds (Drum, Red) will school up. Target them at the bridges during outgoing tide using Menhaden. The flats are good on the moving tide as well. The morning bite is best if you can find the high tide. Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) are mixed in. Black Drum (Drum, Black) are biting around lights at night. Jack, Crevalle are heavy throughout the day. Flounder (Flounder, Southern) are starting to pick up. There are lots of people gigging them in the evening. Strays are caught on rod and reel. Live Shrimp has been the key bait for most fish. Gulp Shrimp on jigheads are a great artificial. Trout are loving chartreuse tails. Zman Swimbaits are also a great choice. PRO ANGLER APP USERS – With this system pushing through most of Florida, we expect a lot of wind and tough conditions. INSHORE – Inshore, the Redfish (Drum, Red) are biting well this week. We are also seeing some great Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) turn up along with them. The sizes are great and the bite is consistent. Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have been thick and there has been no difficulty catching them. From the surf we are seeing some Spanish (Mackerel, Spanish), Whiting (Kingfish, Southern) and Cobia. The Kings (Mackerel, King) have moved in closer to the shore. They are still a bit scattered so anglers targeting them will still have to put some time in. Ladyfish and Bluerunners have shown up. Neither are hot yet but as the season progresses we expect to see an increase. OFFSHORE – Things are getting hot offshore this week. Farther out the Wahoo, Mahi (Dolphin), Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) and Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) have all made an appearance. Closer to shore we have reports of Cobia and Kings (Mackerel, King). They are a bit scattered but not too difficult to catch. Bonita (Bonito, Little Tunny) are making an appearance this week, too. They have not heated up yet but they will as the weather warms up. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Things are beginning to heat up a bit this week. Redfish (Drum, Red) and Sheepshead continue to bite. They are becoming a bit scattered but can still be found around structure and in shallow areas. Shrimp is a great bait for both fish however Fiddler Crabs are killer for the Sheepshead. From the surf we are seeing some Pompano (Pompano, Florida) turn up. They are not quite thick yet but they’ll get there. Keep an eye out for the Sharks (Shark, Bull) as they are a fun catch and have been robbing fish. Cobia and Kings (Mackerel, King) have made their way closer this week. They have not fired up yet for the season but it’s a good sign of a Spring pattern. We expect this bite to continue into the weekend. OFFSHORE – Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) are not too far out this week and are thick. Anglers are having no trouble at all catching a few of these beauties. Swimming the bottom are some Beeliners (Snapper, Vermillion) that are also fairly populous. A bit farther out we have reports of a ton of Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray). There is quite a bit of action in the offshore this week. Half Hitch Bait & Tackle (850) 234-2621 pc@halfhitch.com https://www.halfhitch.co

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Even with the weather being tough on the emerald coast’s anglers, there has been some noticeable catches. We are seeing some great fish from the land based areas such as the jetties, pier, bridges and surf. A few more Cobia have been caught off the pier along with Sheepshead, Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish), Whiting (Kingfish, Southern), Pompano (Pompano, Florida), and a King Mackerel (Mackerel, King)! The pier is getting fishier each day. Cobia baits staying the same with live and artificial eels as well as custom cobia jigs. The Spanish Mackerel are hitting gotcha plugs, spoons, and bubble rigs. The Kings can be caught using live bait fish as well as an assortment of shimano and yozuri castable crankbaits. For the Whiting, Pompano (Pompano, Florida), and possible Drum (Drum, Black), use fishbites, fresh dead peeled Shrimp, and Sand Fleas. The surf is staying consistent with the pier as far as Pompano, Drum, and Whiting. The bridge continues to produce Sheepshead using live Shrimp and Fiddler Crabs. The jetties are seeing it’s fair share of Spanish Mackerel and Sheepshead. I recommend the gotcha plug for the Spanish and live shrimp for the Sheepshead. Inshore, The Redfish (Drum, Red) and Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) bite seems to be picking up quickly. Just the other day we also saw a school of large Jack Crevalle (Jack, Crevalle) cruising the flats. Sheepshead and Drum staying consistent on the bridge pilings. Live Shrimp is the best all around bait for the inshore fisherman. OFFSHORE – Nearshore, the Cobia are showing up and will continue to do so for the weeks to come. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) are also starting to appear which means the Kings (Mackerel, King) will be right behind them. For the Cobia, live Eels and custom jigs. For the Spanish troll tree rigs and spoons. For the Kings, try slow trolling some live baits like cigar minnows or use yozuri trolling plugs. The bottom bite has been great. The bottom fishing bite is on fire! Triggers (Triggerfish, Gray) and Amberjack (Jack, Amberjack Greater) still hungry and as long as they make the tape make for a tasty meal. Almost every bottom species is biting and there’s only 2 you can’t keep! Gags (Grouper, Gag) and Red Snapper (Snapper, Red). Squid, cigar Minnows, and Bucktail jigs to get the rod folded over. So many sharks being caught right now. Some targeted and some a by product of a different hooked fish. For those targeting the Sharks, swing in and grab a Malin stainless steel leader rigged with a circle hook and a Bonita. BAIT REPORT – Cigar Minnows and Herring are right on the beach this week. INSHORE – The Cobia bite has just started this week and is red hot. Live bait or swim baits are the best bet to hook them. Spanish Mackerel (Mackerel, Spanish) and Pompano (Pompano, Florida) have also been swimming the beach this week. Clark spoons are doing well for the Spanish while the Pompano prefer Pompano jigs and Sand fleas. The sizes are decent so far. Big bull Redfish (Drum, Red) have shown up in this area. OFFSHORE – Triggerfish and Ajs have been offshore this week. Ajs are in 130 ft on the wrecks this week. They are as close as 100 ft. Anglers are using big, live bait such as a Porgy this week. INSHORE – Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are all over the beach this week. Anglers are using Minnows and gold or silver spoons to hook them. INSHORE – Things have not changed a lot this week. The Sheepshead bite is increasing around the bridges and structure. The Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) have died down with the cooler weather and wind. This has kept a lot of anglers off the water and inshore this week. The bull Redfish (Drum, Red) are still in the bay and have a consistent bite. We expect to see this continue into the weekend. The Ship’s Chandler Marine 850-837-9306 http://theshipschandler.com/

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – The Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) bite is beginning to pick up after a slow start. The nearshore wrecks are holding the best sizes in 50-80 ft of water. They can be caught using live bull Minnows or half ounce jigheads with a soft plastic. Bumping them off the bottom is the best technique. Closer to the beach we are seeing a lot of action within 10 miles East or West from the pass. There are some big Bull Reds (Drum, Red) spawning on the beach. They are within 10 ft to 80 yards and moving back and forth in schools of 30-300. In the deeper parts of the bay you can see birds working the middle area feeding on the bait. There are more Reds holding up underneath. Anglers can troll stretch 25s or throw swimbaits and jig heads, letting them sink and then slowly retrieving. The Sheepshead are being caught by the bridge and various structures. They are loving Crabs, Oysters, and live or dead Shrimp. Anglers are chumming them up by the pylons as well. There is a lot of action to be had throughout the inshore this week. OFFSHORE – The Tuna, Yellowfin are doing well around the rigs this week. Anglers are chunking for them sometimes using Tuna, Blackfin. They are swimming as well and can be caught on a jig. Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Gray) are now open so anglers are pretty excited about this. They have moved just offshore at this point and are turning up in good sizes. Snapper, Red are thick and anglers are incidentally hooking them while using a two hook rig with cut Squid so be careful of that as Red Snapper is out of season. They can be found in 70-90 ft of water this week. Capt. Kirk Ogren The Ship’s Chandler Marine 850-837-9306 http://theshipschandler.com/

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Throughout the inshore we are seeing a great bite of Drum, Black, Sheepshead and Reds (Drum, Red). They are all decent sizes so far. The Sheepshead are hitting live Fiddler Crabs and the Drum are loving Shrimp. The time of day does not matter so far as long as you fish around structure. There have also been reports of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are being caught on cut bait or live Shrimp being dragged along the bottom. OFFSHORE – Triggerfish are now open however they seem more difficult to find now. Around 80 ft of water there are also some Porgy being caught along with Snapper, Gray from the bottom. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – There are quite a few fish throughout the inshore this week. Reds (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are mixed with some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and White Trout (Seatrout, Sand) however the water is murky due to the rain lately so they aren’t always easy to find. The best places to look are throughout the bayous for clean water to find Trout. The Reds and Flounder are biting for jig head grubs bouncing on the bottom. This will be your best bet in catching them. OFFSHORE – It’s Aj (Jack, Amberjack Greater) season and they are doing well. The Triggers (Triggerfish, Gray) are also being reeled in with both great numbers and sizes. They can be found anywhere from 80-200 ft of water on double hooks using cut bait. Cigar minnow, Mackerel and Squid are all great choice for the hook. New top of the line Jupiters are in! Stop by the Ship’s Chandler to check them out. INSHORE – Things are on the tough side between the remnants of Red Tide, brackish water and the weather. Angler who can find some clean water can expect to see some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) and Reds (Drum, Red). The sizes are decent however the bite is not consistent at this point. There are no reports of Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) yet however we hope to see them when the water clears up. OFFSHORE – Triggerfish (Triggerfish, Ocean) and Ajs (Jack, Amberjack Greater) have recently reopened so anglers are excited to get out once the weather clears up. INSHORE – Cigar minnows are running this week or anglers can cast net Finger Mullet. There are also some Bull Minnows for anyone looking to put some time in. The Ship’s Chandler has lots of great specials on everything from clothing to rods and reels. Stop in and check it out. OFFSHORE – There are still Reds (Drum, Red) in the bay and the rivers. There is also a decent bite on Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) along with some Trout (Seatrout, Spotted). They are loving the gulp scented soft plastics or vudu Shrimp. The weather has been really tough with rain the past week and going forward into the weekend. On the bright side the cold front on the weekend should bring up the Trout sizes and increase the bites. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are hitting live Cigar Minnows and live Bull Minnows. Soft plastic gulps are working as well. No particular color is working better however mullet imitations are best. Big Bull Reds (Drum, Red) are schooling up in the bay. Anglers are trolling stretch 25s in no particular color. 25 ft water is the best spots to find the big Reds. There are no signs of Sheepshead yet this week. OFFSHORE – It’s pretty slow offshore due to some Red Tide and unfavorable weather. Most anglers are awaiting the open of Triggerfish and focusing on the inshore this week. BAIT REPORT – There is still a spotty Minnow run this week. Anglers who are determined and put some time in should be able to find a decent catch on a Sabiki rig. December 17, 2015

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bridges and docks continue to hold a steady Sheepshead and Redfish (Drum, Red) bite this week. Live Shrimp are the best bait for the Redfish while Sheeps are preferring Fiddler Crabs. Anglers can also find Reds holding up on grass flats. They have been throwing artificials in neutral colors such as white and white/red. Quiet plastics are the best way to go. OFFSHORE – There is not much action reported from the offshore at this point. There is still a decent Snapper, Vermillion bite off the reefs which aren’t too far out however this is the only fish reported so far. Anglers heading out over the weekend can always check out our Fish Guide feature which provides additional information and suggestions to help improve the catch. BAIT REPORT – Cigar Minnows are on the nearshore reefs that can be pulled up on one a toss that Sabiki rig. Adventure Marina Bait, Fuel and Watersports 850-243-5721 adventuremarina.com

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) and Reds (Drum, Red) are the main focus so far this week. They seem to be hitting just about anything such as live Bull Minnows, small live Cigar Minnows, Bucktail jigs with a grub or even trolling a rapala over schools of Reds has been productive. If anglers can get their hands on some Shrimp they tend to do well for Reds as well. There have been no reports of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) so far this week however as the weather continues to cool slightly the bite and sizes are expected to increase. Your best bet is still the flats in the early morning for anglers deciding to target Trout this week. OFFSHORE – There has not been a lot of people heading offshore so far this week however there is still a great bite to be found. Tuna (Tuna, Yellowfin & Tuna, Blackfin) have been hitting well. There has also been a steady Wahoo bite a bite farther out along with a few reports of Marlin, Blue showing up. Most of the action is beginning at 50 miles and farther. There have been no reports of Snapper so far this week. BAIT REPORT – Cigar Minnows and Herring are both running and working well for inshore bait. The Ship’s Chandler Marine has lots of great holiday sales coming up for all of the last minute shoppers out there! The Ship’s Chandler Marine 850-837-9306 http://theshipschandler.com/

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Reds (Drum, Red) are hot this week. They have been hitting live Shrimp, sometimes under a popping cork. Drum (Drum, Black) have also turned up throughout the inshore on the same bait. Anglers are still limited on Trout (Seatrout, Spotted) only finding them during the early morning bite on the flats. A popping cork with live Shrimp is the bait of choice as well. The Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) have been difficult to find but there is a bite. Some are keepers although there are a lot of throw backs as well. In the surf anglers have seen Reds, Drum as well as Pompano, Florida too. OFFSHORE – Now that the weather has calmed down boaters have been able to get on the water this week. Reports have come in of Triggers (Triggerfish, Ocean), Snapper (Snapper, Vermillion & Snapper, Gray). Mainly everything is reported to be throwbacks. It is suspected that the Tuna, Blackfin should continue this week as well however there have been no reports of them so far. Anglers heading out for the weekend can always take a look at our Tips feature as well for more suggestions and information to help improve the catch. BAIT REPORT – Mullet have pretty well dissipated which is typical of the season. This has turned most anglers towards Live Shrimp at this point, most of which is store bought. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – There is a lot of action happening inshore this week. Lots of Trout (Seatrout, Spotted), Reds (Drum, Red) and Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are moving this week. Pilchards, Menhaden, Finger Mullet and live Shrimp are all working as these fish seem to be hitting just about everything this time of year. Trolling under the birds is working well with a plug as an artificial alternative. OFFSHORE – Despite the harsh conditions in this area the deep drops have been fairly successful for Driftfish, Black, Grouper (Grouper, Snowy). Wahoo, Kings (Mackerel, King) and Blackfin (Tuna, Blackfin) are all biting well on the troll. Anglers are using purple/black, purple/orange or blue/white and finding these most effective. BAIT REPORT – Mullet are running in both finger and large sizes. Anglers are cast netting for them. Cigar Minnow and Herring are both still thick and easy to find. The Ship’s Chandler Marine 850-837-9306

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – The bite inshore has been much more active this week. Both Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) and Reds (Drum, Red) have had a solid and consistent bite over the last week. The night fishing for Seatrout, Spotted has been doing well too. Anglers are fly lining live Shrimp. Little baitfish are difficult to find lately so Live Shrimp or small jerkbait is a good bet as well. For Flounder, a bouncing gulp on the bottom is key as the bite has begun to pick back up. East, past the jetties is doing great for Pompano, Florida and slot Reds. The occasional Sheepshead has turned up on Live Shrimp as well. Crabs are working well too however they are difficult to find in this area. OFFSHORE – Weather has made offshore fishing difficult for anglers this week. Not many have made it out however our sources expect that when the weather finally does lay down that the King (Mackerel, King) bite will continue to do well in roughly 100 ft and within 5 miles. Anglers have been looking for birds as well as Bonito. Once one is caught, some fishermen have been chunking the schools and hitting some good sizes and numbers. BAIT REPORT – There is not much bait pushing through at this time. There is the occasional Mullet however they have become extremely spotty at this time of year. Fort Walton Beach / Destin

INSHORE – The Red Tide was making inshore angling hard for the past few weeks however conditions are beginning to clear up now. There are still some Seatrout, Spotted around and they are chasing anything live. Finger Mullet, Greenbacks and Menhaden are running and working very well to hook them. Flounder (Flounder, Southern & Flounder, Gulf) are showing up recently as they move from the bayous and rivers out to the gulf. This means the season will be good soon. Leadhead jigs with a gulp tail are working as well. Reds (Drum, Red) are also still biting well. Bouncing gulp on the bottom is what Reds are taking. OFFSHORE – The bite in this area has been fantastic. There is definitely no lack of fish here. Tuna, Yellowfin and Billfish – Marlin, White are biting around the oil rigs while anglers are finding a lot of success live baiting or chunking for them. There has been a consistent Wahoo bite as well for boaters trolling. Kings (Mackerel, King) and Tuna (Tuna, Blackfin) have been mixed together and running thick anywhere from 5 – 25 miles out. They are hitting chunks or live bait as well as anglers are having no trouble hooking them. BAIT REPORT – There are huge schools of Mullet and Menhaden around the bayous and harbor providing ample live bait for anglers. The Ship’s Chandler Marine 850 – 837 – 9306

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

INSHORE – Fishing has been slow in the shallow water. Flounder, Southern has been biting as well as some Seatrout, Spotted, however they are fairly quiet. The bridges are hiding some slot Reds (Drum, Red). Bouncing a gulp on the bottom is working well for each of these species as well as, of course, live bait such as Bull Minnows or Shrimp. OFFSHORE – Snapper, Red and Sheepshead are biting on the wrecks within 9 miles of the shore. There is less than 100 ft of water at that point so they are fairly close. Anything cut will work well to hook either of these. Cigar minnows or Squid along the bottom are working well too. There has been a great Kingfish bite and anglers are slow trolling for them using spoons, stretches and skirted Cigar minnows. Follow the bait and the birds to find the fish. BAIT REPORT – Running bait is fairly limited with the exception of some sporadic Pinfish in the sound. You can always check out Adventure Marina Bait, Fuel and Watersports to stock up on anything you can’t find in the water. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Action offshore has been solid as of late. Mahi Mahi have had a good bite along with Yellowfin (Tuna, Yellowfin) and Marlin (Billfish – Marlin, White). If anglers head toward the Southwest break about 23 miles they will start catching fish anywhere up to about 60 miles or even towards the oil rigs at 150 miles for the determined angler. Best colors have been purple/black followed by orange/black and greens. Wahoo is expected to improve as the season has only just begun. Dolphin are hiding out around logs and in grass beds so you may have to start searching for them. High speed trolling has been the most successful for all of the above species. INSHORE – Due to extreme recent weather conditions there is no inshore fishing at this time. Fish are belly-up just about everywhere. The 40 knot winds should take about a week or two to correct itself and dissipate however we could see this sooner with a strong North wind. Anglers will see repercussions until the spring once new bait has been given a chance to grow and fish will follow them in. BAIT REPORT – There are no bait reported to be running at the moment. For more suggestions on what to use with specific fish you can always check out our Tips feature which provides additional helpful information on the fish of your choice. OF NOTE – There are lots to see with the new 2016 lineup of boats that have just arrived at The Ship’s Chandler Marine. You may walk in but you’ll be floating out. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – High winds have made getting out here tough. It seems to calm down for a few hours in the afternoon so if you’re willing to risk it, that’d be the best time to go. You’ll find some more accessible waters closer to shore. Anglers have reported some good Kingfish about 9 miles out as well as some Mahi Mahi popping up right next to the boats. We expect to see the weather calming down this coming weekend and most boaters will be heading out after being stuck at the docks for these last few days. INSHORE – Trout is out but the Flounder and Redfish are in. If you’re fishing any structures such as bridges, docks or rock piles you can expect to hook either of these using gulps, or similar artificial baits. Pinfish are working for some of the larger Flounder so pick up some of these on your way out. Reds are mostly being reported on the bottom taking Live Shrimp or Crab. Although the run has slowed down Finger Mullet is working well too. Stick to the structures but if you are along the shorelines you will find some smaller Flounder and Redfish there as well. Going into the weekend the weather will be warming up as the wind calms down so head out to the surf where you can expect to hook some Whiting and Pompano too. BAIT REPORT – As the Pilchards and Mullet slow down we are seeing plenty of Pinfish, Sand Fleas and Shrimp on the surf. There is definitely no lack of bait here so be sure to stock up before you head out. Adventure Marina Bait, Fuel and Watersports 1201 Miracle Strip Pkwy SE Fort Walton Beach, FL 850-243-5721

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Blackfin, Tuna and Dolphin are going to be offshore, and maybe some Wahoo as well. You’re going to have to find as clean of water as possible, which may be 60 to 100 miles out. There is some weather building into next weekend, so keep an eye out for weather conditions. Colors to use are black and red, black and blue, or black and violet for the most part. If you want to use strips of anything, Bonita is the way to go. INSHORE – Redfish are on right now. There are a few Pompano left as they make their migration back to the South. There have also been Ladyfish, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel and Kingfish. BAIT REPORT – The Mullet are starting to move out into the bay. They won’t be near the beach, but they’ll definitely be near the passes. Bass Professional Shops World Wide Sportsman 4301 Legendary Drive Destin, FL 850-269-6200 br>

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There’s a few White marlin out at the spur of the nipple. There’s also some Blue Marlin. Ballyhoo skirted in Blue/White or Pink/White are working well. INSHORE – The bridges have been pretty good for Redfish and Trout. Brook’s bridge has been great for really big Black Drum. There’s some Flounder moving. Most live bait including blue crab or shrimp are working really well for everything. If you can’t get your hands on shrimp or crab you can definitely use Pinfish as they’ve getting busted hard by the game fish around here. BAIT REPORT – There’s still Pinfish around as they have been all year. The Crabs have fizzled out a bit with all the Black Drum around feeding on them. Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

Offshore: There’s a blue water push about 100 miles out and about 25 miles south of the spur, and anglers are pulling in Dolphin, Blues, Wahoo and Marlin on skirted Ballyhoos. The “whities” prefer the peewee (smaller) Ballyhoos.

Inshore: Sailfish and Blackfin Tuna are coming in within half a mile of the beach this time of year. Anglers this close in are trolling with the standard Ballyhoo, but also with Cigar Minnows and live Herring much like the rigs that are used for King Mackerel. Surf anglers are picking up Whiting, Ladyfish, Bluefish, and good sized Redfish. Flounder are also starting to show up in good numbers and hitting white and root beer colored Grubs with weighted heads, Gulp and even scented lures, small Bull Minnows and small Cigar Minnows. The bait bite has been really good for Cigar Minnows, Herring, and Croakers in shore.

Of Note: Labor Day is coming up, and the fishing has been great. Ship’s Chandler has been selling a lot of boats and fishing tackle.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The Grouper bite is pretty good even just 5 miles out while bottom fishing. There’s a good Amberjack bite on as well. Jigging aftrificials can be very effective for Amberjack.

INSHORE –
The water is still pretty warm right now. Trout and Redfish, however, are still thick on the flats. Shrimp are a good bait for them.

BAIT REPORT – You can always catch Croakers and Pinfish in the shallows with a castnet.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – The bottom fishing offshore is good right now with plenty of people doing well on the Grouper and Jacks. There are some big Vermillion Snapper on the wrecks and reefs as well. Squid is going to be your best bet bottom fishing, but if you plan on doing a little fishing inshore first, keep the Ladyfish that you catch, because those make phenomenal cut bait. If you would rather troll than bottom fish around structure, there have been reports of White Marlin being caught at both the Elbow and the Nipple; about 50 miles off shore. You want to troll Ballyhoo or iLand lures. You are more apt to catch a Sailfish or Wahoo, but everything out there is impressive game.

INSHORE – Fishing is great inshore right outside the pass on the lip near the sea buoy by the red and green can. If you plan to fish off the beach you want to use Sand Fleas, Shrimp, Squid, or FishBites. The Ships Chandler sells FishBites and they are made out of real Crab and Shrimp. In the surf there are Pompano, Whiting, Flounder, Bull Redfish, Bluefish, Ladyfish, and Jack Crevalle.

BAIT REPORT – There is tons of bait inshore right now. Greenies, Cigar Herring, Hardtails, you name it, you should have no problem filling a Sabiki or cast net out there.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Several Dolphin have been caught. Andrew over at Brooks Bridge Bait & Tackle caught two nice kings on Tuesday, and a bunch of Triggerfish – but they are closed. Amberjacks and Red Snapper are biting well on pretty much everything. For the bigger Amberjacks use Hardtails. Generally, you want to stick to live bait, but if you are going to bottom fish then you want to go with cut Squid and cut Cigar Minnows.

INSHORE – The Bay Trout and Redfish are running right now. The fishing around the grass and structures is good right now. Try fishing from the docks, piers, and bridges. Live shrimp is going to be your best bait but if you are going to go artificial try a Berkley Gulp.

BAIT REPORT – There is lots of bait around right now.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Amberjacks have opened up. The Mackerel have also turned on, both Spanish and King. If you have numbers, bottom fishing can be exceptional right now. You don’t even have to go that far out, there are decent fish within 5 miles, even Dolphin and Cobia! If you are trolling within 5 miles you of the pass in 30-60 feet of water you should also clean up on the Kingfish. Live bait is the best if you plan on bottom fishing, plan on investing in a $20 scoop and having enough live bait to last you through the day.

INSHORE – Bay fishing is good for the Trout and Redfish which are running strong right now. There are also a few Black Drum and Black Snapper. Work the docks that go into the Sound or the Bay. Fish hang around there and the structures. Try the Destin and Brooks Bridges. If you find a grass bed, there should be fish there. The problem is finding the grass. Live shrimp is going to be the best bait, your only other alternative is to catch some Croaker and use those. Fishing inshore is a little bit slow over all because of the full moon.

BAIT REPORT – There are some Croaker around right now that you could use for bait.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – There are some big Kings out there right now. Expect to find Yellowfin and Blackfin Tuna mixed in, those guys have a taste for Cigar Minnow so bring along the right bait if you are going to hit them. The Grouper bite has been good on the bottom with whole live bait; Joe at the Ships Chandler recommends taking some smaller hooks and use a two hook rig for the Vermillion Snapper, with each hook baited with a square inch of squid. There have been some massive snapper out there – but since they are over slot they have to be released back. The Triggerfish are also big out there, and same with the Jacks. Other than that you are going to find the odd Scamp out there – fishing is good right now.

INSHORE – The Trout bite has been tough lately. Anglers are still catching them – and some nice 5-6 pounders too on the north side of the bay, but those suckers like to play coy. The Redfish have been good on the outgoing tide on the bridge. If you are going out just a few miles there are some nice King Mackerel, Blackfin Tuna, Sailfish, and Cobia that are running much closer than they usually do. Bait wise, shrimp is always your best bet for the Redfish, but there are small Pogies around right now that pretty much everything eats.

BAIT REPORT – There is lots of bait. Right out front of the Ships Chandler every morning on the lip there are Cigar Minnows, Herring, and Menhaden. There is Pinfish in the harbor if you are looking to catch them too.

Overall fishing is awesome and we have been having a great year. The Ships Chandler sells boats, and if you are looking for anything boat related give them a visit.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Offshore in the gulf there are King Mackerel around the inshore wrecks. Over all the offshore bite is good, but nothing crazy. Picking off one King Mackerel here and there with a few Bonita mixed in. As for bottom fishing, Grouper season is open, but it has been tough, and that strong current really pushes everything around. Drop down a 20 oz and it will be 30 yards behind the boat in less than a minute. Most of the good offshore fishing is going to start 20 miles out. As for bait, stick with the local Cigar Minnows and Threadfin Herring.

INSHORE – Pete over at The Ship’s Chandler Marine has got bad news for us.The fishing is tough right now. It’s that classic, too-hot, middle-of-July, slump. The back bay fishing has been really tough. Your best bite is going to be at night or in the first hour of daylight. At night time try and fish under the lights for Speckled Trout. Redfishing is good on the outgoing tide around the bridges and in the deeper water. There are schools of Jack Crevalle on the beach, some bigger fish in the 25-30 pound range too.

BAIT REPORT – There is plenty of bait around right now, lots of Cigar Minnows and Threadfin Herring which are great for all types of fishing. Shrimp are also an ideal inshore bait.

Been in business for 35 years in fishing tackle – this guy really knows his stuff. If you are in the area check out the shop.

Fort Walton Beach / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – We had some wild weather earlier this week and none of our guys wanted to brave that storm to go out and see what fish are striking. I’d rely on the previous week’s reports for now until we can get more concrete evidence for you.

INSHORE – On the pier the Tarpon have been running. The Black Drum are still pretty thick too, but again things could have changed since the storm earlier this week. There have been sightings of huge Permit schools. The Snapper were biting right outside the jetties. As for bait, you can’t go wrong with Shrimp, but chances are whatever small bait you can catch you will be able to use – just make sure that you target the right fish.

Fort Walton / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Snapper season is in, but not for much longer. The King Mackerel are on fire and Andrew over at Brooks Bridge Bait and Tackle Inc has seen a lot of them. Snapper is pretty good too. From what he has seen the Snapper has all been within 9 miles. Live Cigar Minnows is the best, but chunks of Cigar Minnows or squid on a two hook rig works well. Andrew likes to take a 5 pound box of frozen cigar minnows and squid out on a Carolina Rig for the bigger Snapper around the wrecks. Try fishing around the Destin public numbers – Andrew has a list in store if you can’t find them, go introduce yourself.

INSHORE – Fishing has been good but you want to stick to the bridges. Captain Phil Rooks went out to the west pass jetti to catch live bait and ended up with 14 bull Redfish that we all 40+ inch. Black drum has been biting off the hook, same with the Redfish too. Speckled trout has been on but only at early morning and night; fish for them under the lights at night. The bait is so-so, so getting out there and being successful depends on tailoring your bait to the fish you are targeting.

BAIT REPORT – It is around, definitely around the west pass Jetti where Captain Phil dragged home those bull Redfish!

Fort Walton / Destin Fishing Report

OFFSHORE – Offshore has been good for Dolphin and Wahoo in terms of trolling. Use Ballyhoo and consider adding a skirt. In terms of bottom fishing try dropping down some live bait for the Grouper and Snapper.

INSHORE – Shrimp are spawning now and there are lots around and the fish love to eat them. The Trout are the main fish in the Bay right now. They are mostly responding well to live Croakers.Artificials work well too, some good brands are Fish Fights, DOA and Gulp. Everyone has their own preference for colour but some like pink and white and some prefer a more natural colour like penny.[b]r

BAIT REPORT – Bait is plentiful and the best way to get it is with a cast net or a small gold hook with a little bait on it.

OFFSHORE – Offshore has been good for Dolphin and Wahoo in terms of trolling. Use Ballyhoo and consider adding a skirt. In terms of bottom fishing try dropping down some live bait for the Grouper and Snapper.

INSHORE – The bite is good here right now. There are Trout, and Redfish. Use artificials, soft plastic Gulps, or hard plastic MirrOlures. In clear water you can use just about any colour but when the water is a little muddy try using new penny or chartreuse lures. Tarpon also on their way in.They are getting better and better. They are super aggressive in the morning regardless of the tide. Use a topwater plug to get the best results.

BAIT REPORT – In this area you’ll find Herring and Cigar Minnows.
